Grenadine is essentially pomegranate syrup.  Or, more specifically, it is supposed to be pomegranate syrup.  The stuff that you get at most liquor stores is corn syrup and red food coloring with nary a drop of pomegranate.  If the recipe below seems like too much trouble, there are companies that make “real” grenadine now – just make sure to read the label – however, we think this homemade version is worth the trouble

  1. Combine equal parts POM pomegranate juice and white sugar BY WEIGHT.
  2. Immersion blend until sugar has completely dissolved.
  3. For each bottle of POM used add 3 dashes of Orange bitters and 6 dashes Grapefruit bitters.

Lasts 1 month.
